We are always excited when we have people coming to our club. In the past we have had visits from International presidents, Federation governors, Federations presidents, Federation lieutenant-governors, and members from various clubs. As well we also have had speakers to tell us about various topics of interest including other service organizations and volunteering that has been done in other countries.

Recently we were very honoured that the Cosmopolitan International president, Dr. Richard Alm, came to our fair province after attending the Mid-term Federation Convention & Bonspiel in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Sturgeon Valley club member, Tim Schultz (an islet transplant reciptient) arranged for a tour of the Alberta Diabetes Institute and accompanied Dr. Alm and Western Canada Federation Governor, Rod Randolph, on the tour. While the building is not yet completely finished, the International president was impressed with this soon to be opened world class facility for research into diabetes. Later that day the three local clubs, namely Edmonton Cosmopolitan Club, St. Albert Cosmopolitan Club and Sturgeon Valley Cosmopolitan, attended a function in honour of Dr. Alm’s visit. Governor Rod Randolph had arranged for the visit to Alberta and The St. Albert club hosted the event. A great evening was had by all and Sturgeon Valley president Kathy Anderson brought in a new member, Amanda Bavie, who was inducted into the club by Dr. Ahm.
*Dr. Alm is a podiatrist and deals with many problems that diabetics have in this area. He stated that “one should do something for someone else every day because it feels good” and that joining a club like Cosmpolitans provides many opportunities to give of oneself, no matter how busy one is or what one’s talents are and the benefits to oneself are well worth it.

The bottom two photos are taken in the entry of the Clinical Islet Transplantation Lab just after the group completed the tour. Rod Randolph is the CosmopolitanWestern Federation Governor and Dr. Tatsuya Yin is the Technical Director of the Clinical Islet Transplantaion Isolation Lab. There are two parallel labs through the two doors; each able to handle one pancreas at a time and completely independent of each other. The pancreas is matched to the recipient using the accompanying spleen and then the islets are removed using enzyme mixtures as well as other ingredient. The cells are then prepared for transplantation and used or they are stored for up to 48 hours if the patient has to travel to Edmonton. Once the patient is prepped the solution is taken to the University of Alberta operating room where the transplant procedure is carried out.
