About Dana’s Disease

Read the book for a better understanding!
Dana’s Disease is a fascinating book based on real events that explores the heart wrenching emotions when one learns one’s child has Type 1 diabetes and all that that involves and the determination to cope with it. It is written in a very readable and down-to-earth style that helps one to understand the day-to-day moments (or even moment-to-moment moments) that can throw one into a tailspin and the gradual acceptance of it.
It is written from a father’s perspective. Jim Kanerva, the father, is extremely motivated and dedicated to finding a cure for this disease. Since he wrote the book, his other two sons have developed Type 1 diabetes. He is a member of our club and is on the Board of Directors for ADF (Alberta Diabetes Foundation.)

Try to imagine suddenly finding out your three year old has Type 1 diabetes. You can’t even begin to understand all the ways in which it impacts a family unless you have also experienced this situation.

:Those who have read the book have felt it is “well worth the read.”
This excerpt by Dr. Rajotte is taken from the front of the book.
“I have spent my career trying to stop diabetes with science. Jim Kanerva delivers a heartfelt and realistic account of the human impact of this insidious disease. Dana’s Disease helps to illuminate why I continue my work.”
Quote by: Dr Rajotte, Founder and Director of the Edmonton Protocol
